Hardened blade

This magnificent Viking sword is based on a silver-exchanged bronze sword hilt, which was excavated in 1830 on the island of Eigg (Inner Hebrides, Scotland). Although some blade fragments were also found at that time, they could not be preserved. The original, beautifully detailed grave find can be admired in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. This fine piece of Viking history, dated to the 9th / early 10th century, is classified as type D according to the Petersen Typology for Viking swords.
