The viking settlement Birka was an important trading center of the vikings in the northern Baltic Sea; founded in ca. 800 AD on the island Björkö inmidst the swedish Mälar lake in the realm of the Svear, 30 km west of Stockholm; surrounded by a high wall and protected by a nearby castle; several ports for traders from all over the Baltic area and beyond. Excavations unearthed quantities of findings of the viking era, which offer a rich insight in life, craft and trade of the viking era.
